This fall marked the 20th anniversary of the what might just be the craziest ending to a football game -- ever. The state of Texas often gets the attention and unofficial title as the center of high school football. Games and moments like these back up that claim.
The 1994 Class 5A regional semifinal featured two 12-0 squads: Plano East Senior High School (ranked 2nd in Texas, 12th nationally) met John Tyler High School (ranked 3rd in Texas). Plano East trailed 27-17 early in the 4th quarter but led a long drive into the red zone. Tyler forced a fumble and took it to the house to increase the lead to 31-17. Lightning stuck twice as Tyler returned another fumble for a score just 4 plays into the next Plano East drive. With 3:03 left in the game, Tyler led 41-17. Normally, back-to-back fumble touchdowns to seal a playoff win would be a wild story itself. Most of the 20,000 fans in attendance started heading towards the exits; some were already on the highways heading home. But for those who stayed, they witnessed an ending for the ages: SEVEN touchdowns in the final 4.5 minutes, FIVE touchdowns in the final 3 minutes. And the ultimate plot twist for the finale. If you can find a crazier finish to a football game, by all means let us know.
