Defending National Champions and winners of 17 straight games, the 2001 Sooners brought a #3 national rank down to the Texas State Fair for the annual Red River Rivalry with the Burnt Orange. The week before, Oklahoma survived a 38-37 shootout vs. #11 Kansas State. But this defensive struggle was the exact opposite, as neither offense could generate any production. Several missed field goals by both sides left the score at 7-3 Oklahoma with just 2 minutes left. Following a Nathan Vasher interception, Texas faced the task of taking the ball 99 yards for the game-winning score. Watch as Safety ROY WILLIAMS ensures an OU victory on the first play:
This play is one of the most memorable from the Red River Rivalry, and certainly would have taken home our weekly Deion Sanders Award for the Best PICK SIX. Teddy Lehman housed it with the incredible assist from All-American Roy Williams. The Sooners would extend their win streak to 19 games before heading to Lincoln, Nebraska for a #1 vs. #2 showdown with the Huskers. A trick play by Eric Crouch won him the Heisman and clinched the 20-10 Husker victory. Oklahoma went on to beat Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl and finish in the top 10 (11-2).
