In 1903 the teams met in an elite matchup, but Michigan Coach Fielding Yost thought MN would attempt to contaminate his water. He had an assistant purchase a 5 gallon jug. After Minnesota's late touchdown, the students rushed the field, ending the game in a 6-6 tie. In the excitement, Yost lost his jug, and Minnesota took possession, claiming 'you'll have to win it back,' thus starting the first rivalry trophy in America. The jug has since been painted half Blue, half Maroon, and lists the scores of every game.
