In the final matchup of our Champions Gauntlet series of computer simulated games between the current champion
and other dominant champions of the BCS era, we have the 2001 Miami Hurricanes taking on 2013 Florida State; the 'Noles are coming off
consecutive losses to 2005 Texas, 2008 Florida, and 2011 Alabama. Based off our Champions Tournament last offseason, the 2001 Miami team is the best of the BCS era, and look to be the 'Noles toughest test.
2001 HURRICANES Heading into the 2000 Bowl Season, Miami felt it was robbed of a chance to play for the title, finishing #3 in the BCS standings behind a team they had already beaten earlier that season (Florida State). Despite losing head coach Butch Jones to the NFL, the 'Canes focused during the offseason, determined to keep their 2001 fate in their own hands by winning every game on the schedule. And that they did. Led by QB Ken Dorsey, the backfield of Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, and Frank Gore, and the receiving core of Andre Johnson, Jeremy Shockey, and Kellen Winslow - this Canes offense simply couldn't be stopped. The vaunted Miami defense also did its part, headlined by LB Jonathan Vilma, NT Vince WIlfork, DE Jerome McDougle, S Ed Reed and CB Philip Buchanon. Collectively, the '01 Canes average margin of victory was 39-9. After shredding Nebraska in the Rose Bowl, Miami was not only crowned National Champions but also thrown into the discussion of all-time greatest teams. Critics are quick to point out their near losses at Boston College and Virginia Tech, but Cane-backers love bringing up the extensive set of NFL talent on the roster. In our computer simulated Champions Tournament last offseason, Miami coasted through the bracket and pulled off a close win over 2011 Alabama to claim the title of 'best team of the BCS era' (1998-2012). We then opened up a fan-vote tweet to compare them to the consensus greatest team ever, the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. #PickSixNation responded loud and clear in favor of Big Red:
MATCHUP RESULTS
2013 Florida State started the Champions Gauntlet with 4 straight victories, 3 of which were convincing blowouts. But past the halfway point, and as the difficulty increased, the smiles were wiped off of Jameis' face. Here in the series finale against defending tournament champion 2001 Miami, it was ALL ABOUT THE U, (again). We haven't seen a full series sweep yet, with the most convincing blowouts in the range of 12-3 or 13-2 in terms of games won out of 15. But here, the 'Canes left no doubt by winning ALL 15 GAMES (average score 35-24), proving they own not only the Sunshine State, but secured their spot as the best team of the BCS era.
