A year after Jameis Winston won the hardware and Marcus Mariota opted to return to Oregon in place of entering the 2014 NFL Draft, there was a heated race for the Heisman Trophy this year. Winston's antics and the loss of Kelvin Benjamin proved too much for the sophomore to join Archie Griffin as the only two-time Heisman winner.
In our Season Preview back in August, Braxton Miller was our pick to win the Heisman, but his preseason injury sidelined him for the season. As Mississippi State surged to the #1 spot in the nation for the first time in school history, the Bulldogs' leader took over the Heisman race. Dak Prescott held the lead until the rough loss to Alabama, which opened it up to a host of contenders in mid-November. On a snowy afternoon in Camp Randall Stadium, Melvin Gordon broke the NCAA Division 1 record for rush yards in a game with 408 in just 3 quarters against Nebraska. This performance, coupled with a season that ranks as the 4th most rushing yards ever, has Gordon as one of the 3 finalists in New York City. Alongside him wil bel Amari Cooper, who has devastated SEC defenses all season for the Playoff-bound Crimson Tide. Cooper leads the nation in receiving yards (1656) and is 2nd in receiving touchdowns (14). But Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has been perfect all season, save for 2 fumbles in their loss to Arizona. He more than avenged that loss in the rematch, a 51-13 Pac-12 Championship Game victory. Mariota finished the season with an incredible 38-2 TD-INT ratio, by far the best in the nation. Add in another 669 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground, and this dual-threat looks poised to become Oregon's first Heisman winner. He led Oregon to a 4-0 record against Top 25 opponents, all of which were by double-digits. His perfect stats, poise in the national spotlight, and dominance against ranked opponents have earned him our vote of 2014 HEISMAN WINNER. CIANCIA and NOWOSWIAT's 2014 HEISMAN WINNER:
